AdvertisementDoe has sought to maintain his anonymity, but claims that the woman — named pseudonymously as "Sarah Smith" — told his father, leading to several other family members finding out. In response, Smith's lawyers point out that Doe's own motion said that he'd "made the mistake" of telling his father. This, Smith's lawyers said, "knocks the struts out from under his complaint." Smith's lawyers accused Doe of pursuing her through a baseless, costly, and intimidatory court battle because she would not agree to get back together with him.

But all the women killed by femicide in Italy have one thing in common: they knew their killers. Italy might have a female prime minister, but she makes a point of not identifying herself as a feminist. The prevalence of domestic violence in Italy is fed by societal failures, says Lorella Zanardo, an activist, educator and documentary filmmaker. While Italy does not have Europe’s highest rate of domestic violence, it is among the lowest ranked in Europe when it comes to gender equality. In Italy, the feminist movement was largely driven by the left, which meant that those who supported right-leaning parties, including current Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have distanced themselves from feminism entirely.

Once my fiancé and I got engaged, we met with a divorce attorney for legal advice about marriage. But the more I brought it up (at least twice a day for a week), the more he agreed that meeting with a divorce lawyer was a good idea. "Most of the time, one partner will go hire a lawyer, have the lawyer draft a standard prenup, that prenup is handed to the other partner who is told to get a lawyer and review it." It sounds dramatic, but meeting with a divorce lawyer before our wedding was actually eye-openingMeeting with the lawyer was actually very beneficial. By Rozanna LatiffKUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's top court on Friday declared more than a dozen Islamic laws enacted by the northeastern state of Kelantan as unconstitutional, in a decision that could affect the legality of sharia in other parts of the Muslim-majority country. Malaysia has a dual-track legal system with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable to Muslims, running alongside civil laws. Islamic laws are enacted by state legislatures while civil laws are passed by Malaysia's parliament. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat who delivered the majority judgement said the state had no power to enact the laws, as the subject of the legal provisions were covered under parliament's law-making powers. "We therefore allow the petition's application for a declaration that (these laws) are void and invalid," she said.

ATLANTA (AP) — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Sunday defended the qualifications of a special prosecutor she hired for her case against Donald Trump and others over efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia after a defense lawyer accused Willis of professional impropriety. At the church, Willis did not address the allegations of an improper relationship. They are paid the same hourly rate and no one has questioned the qualifications of the two white lawyers, she said. Merchant's filing offered no proof of the alleged relationship or trips that she said that Willis and Wade had taken together. Pete Skandalakis, a former district attorney who is executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council, said district attorneys do not have to seek permission before hiring a special prosecutor.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis was accused of having an "improper" relationship with a prosecutor. Willis appointed the prosecutor, Nathan Wade, to oversee the RICO case against Trump. The motion seeks to dismiss the indictment and disqualify Willis and Wade and their offices from further prosecuting the case. Willis said she hired three special prosecutors for the election case: a white man, a white woman, and a Black man. If Willis financially benefited from her relationship with Wade, that may be an ethics violation," he said.

Elon Musk filed new documents in Texas court asking a judge to restrict access to his custody battle. Attorneys for Musk want a judge to issue a protective order before he agrees to sit for a deposition. Elon Musk and Grimes are trying to figure out where he should be deposed in their custody dispute. Musk's lawyers requested an "secured location" in Austin, Texas, for the videotaped deposition. What Is a Covenant Marriage?
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Alyson Krueger | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
But with a covenant marriage, there are stricter guidelines for ending a marriage. Revelations concerning Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House, and his own covenant marriage have brought the unconventional commitment arrangement into the spotlight. Covenant marriages are legally binding contracts or agreements between two people who have the intent to live together for the rest of their lives. Unlike traditional marriages, covenant marriages come with additional requirements, and ending one through divorce is more challenging. Traditional marriage allows a couple to enter the union by filling out a marriage license (among other state requirements), but with a covenant marriage, which is often rooted in religious or moral convictions, the couple must complete premarital counseling with a clergyman or therapist ahead of time.

India awaits top court verdict on same-sex marriages

REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW DELHI, Oct 16 (Reuters) - India's top court will deliver a verdict on Tuesday on granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages, a ruling that has the potential to spark momentous changes in the world's most populous country. The case is seen as a milestone event for LGBTQ rights in India, following a historic 2018 judgement by the Supreme Court that scrapped a colonial-era ban on gay sex. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of India heard arguments in the case between April and May and reserved its order on May 11. The Supreme Court website showed late on Monday that the verdict is due to be pronounced on Tuesday. Members of India's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community (LGBTQ) say they face discrimination despite the 2018 judgement, and that the absence of legal backing for same-sex marriages violates their constitutional rights.

Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes, asked a Texas judge to throw out Elon Musk's custody case. The musical artist Grimes has asked a Texas judge to throw out Elon Musk 's child-custody lawsuit filed last month, saying the case belongs in California, not Austin. In Musk's lawsuit , he claimed they lived together in Texas as recently as July 2023. He splits his time between six companies — with his private jets sometimes making multiple trips between Texas and California within a week. The lawsuit isn't the first sign of conflict between Musk and Grimes.

If the case turns into a child support battle, Musk would be better off if it plays out in Texas. The jurisdiction will come down to who can prove where the kids actually live, Texas or California. It's unclear what either party's ultimate goal is, whether it is related to physical custody, legal custody, child support, or some other issue. Texas caps monthly child support payments at $1,840 for one child, or $2,760 for three children, which is how many Musk and Grimes share. Many factors go into calculating child support payments in California, including net disposable income, but it ultimately comes down to the judge to decide.

Grimes is seeking physical custody of her and Elon Musk's three kids, according to court documents. Grimes, whose legal name is Claire Boucher, is seeking physical custody of her and Musk's kids — 3-year-old X and 1-year-olds Exa and Tau — as well as joint legal custody. Grimes' lawsuit also requests that Musk's suit be thrown out. Differentiating legal custody and physical custody allows parents to share decision-making and rights of access to the kids without an equal custody split, Davis said.
